GN S-1 # 2551
In 1929 GN ordered six northern 4-8-4 type locomotives from Baldwin for passenger service over Marias Pass. These engines, the only northern type to be built in the US with Belpaire fireboxes, had 73# drivers, 68,470# tractive effort and 250# boiler pressure. They remained in the passenger service they were designed for until 1931 when the Oriental Limited was withdrawn. For the next ten years they handled manifest freights between Whitefish and Spokane. The class proved to be superb dual service engines, gradually being transferred east as the western divisions were dieselized. The group changed little in its appearance over the years and lasted until the end of steam.
This earlier PFM/Tenshodo model does not have a lot of detail and the headlight is drilled. A very smooth runner, has been re-motored with a new large Sagami 22 X 40 can motor. While it has had some running, the wheel plating is intact. This DCC ready locomotive does not sport the greatest paint jobs. It has been weathered to look like a loco that has spent a lot of time on the road. The major problem with the paint is some foam has reacted with the oil bunker of the tender. The paint is stock Floquil grimy black, and a quick over spray after sanding the offending areas, should do the trick. I bought this model new and it has had some running. Like all Tenshodo models, this engine pulls like a champ. Picture her at the head of a long string of WFEX reefers.
Original box and only some of the foam.
