CPR K-1 #3100

CPR K-1 #3100

Both Canadian Pacific and Canadian National spanned the continent passed through very similar territory.  Curiously, CPR favored the 4-6-4 type, rostering a total of 65 Hudson locomotives and acquired only two experimental 4-8-4 Northern type locomotives. The CNR on the other hand acquired 203 Northerns, the largest fleet in North America but only five Hudson types.  Interestingly, the CPR Northerns and CNR Hudsons were both assigned to heavy passenger service in the Montreal - Toronto corridor.

In 1928 the Canadian Pacific Argus shops in Montreal built the Northerns. The locomotives spent most of their careers hauling the night passenger trains between Montreal and Toronto. Once replaced by diesels the were transferred to the Western Region to haul freight on the prairies. Both engines have been preserved.

This Van Hobbies model has lots of nice detail and the headlight drilled and ready for a bulb to be installed. The model is painted gray, maroon & black , numbered #3100. The custom is adequate but not a great paint job.  The engine as a new can motor, torque arm and/NWSL  28:1/idler gearbox back head detail. Like many Van Hobbies locomotives imported in the late 70's this engine developed a cracked driver while in storage.  The initial replacement driver set did not match the original so all four axles have been replaced. These new drivers have had limited running. The engine runs well but with slight electric studder.

Original box and foam.
