H-4

H-4

In 1909 Great Northern received 20 Pacifics from Baldwin numbers 1441-1460. This order of Pacifics had 73" drivers, 150 pounds boiler pressure and 35,420 pounds tractive effort.  Then in 1914 GN ordered 25 more Pacifics from Lima numbers 1461-1485 that would be the last of this wheel arrangement ordered from a commercial builder. These later engines were slightly different but similar enough to also be classed as H-4.  They were quickly put to work in mainline passenger service across the GN system. Over the years they were modified and given a wide variety of tenders.  After being bumped by the P-2s and S-2s, they were assigned to mainline and branch line passenger and freight work.

This model from Westside is of a Baldwin H-4 as delivered in 1909 for service on the Oriental Limited. This model is an early import and has limited detail and a working headlight.  I purchased this engine new, intending to rebuild it as a more modern version but never got around to it. It appears lopsided in the pictures because the superstructure was not attached when the photos were taken. The model has the original open from motor and Westside gearbox. It has been test run only.

Original box and foam.
