Locomotives of the Empire Builder |
Medium Great Northern Steam Power |
C-1 class 0-8-0 Switcher |
The date and location of the 847 are unknown. |
The C-1 was scratch built in the early 90's. My friend Dave Brown re-worked the mechanism. Recently I installed a Lenz Gold decoder and Tsunami for sound. The engine has a cam left over from the PFM sound system I installed in 1994 when I painted it. |
H-4 class Pacific |
H-4 H-4 #1455 at Interbay in Seattle, 1950. |
This is an Oriental Limited H-4. This one came unpainted. Prior to painting, I swapped out the trailing truck, scratch built a tender that sits on the original tender frame and trucks. Back in the '70s when I lived in Seattle, I spoke with many old timers who advised that Cascade Division locomotives had black not red roofs. So that is how I paint mine. |
|
H-4 #1442 arrives at Fidalgo with the local. This is a stoch factory painted Oriental Limited H-4. |
H-5 class Pacific |
H-5 number 1351 at Vancouver August 8, 1939, being prepared for a trip south |
This recently acquired model was built by the late Bud Jaggers. The mechanism is being rebuilt by Dave Brown. When he finishes it I'll redetail it before re-painting. It is one of five unfinished models acquired from the estate of Mr. Jaggers in late 2009. |
H-5 #1351 at Interbay, Seattle in 1939, being prepared for a trip north.
|
This recently acquired model was built by the late Irv Lange. It will be matched with the new H-5 above. |
L-1 class 2-6-6-2 |
L-1 #1905 ready to start slugging another load 'up the hill' at Sky in Western Washington. |
The L-1 models have a curious history. They were initially built for Customs Brass and imported. The run was purchesed by Overland who shipped them back to Korea to be redone by Ajin. This model was rebuilt again by Doug Cockerham with a chain drive. It was one of his first efforts done in the mid-80's. Doug also also painted it. |
M-2 class 2-6-8-0 |
M-2 1951 is passing the west leg of the wye at Kettle Falls in 1947. Kettle Falls had no turntable and the wye, located on the southside of the yard, was used to turn steam locomotives. |
The model is another scrtach built locomotive. I repowered it prior to painting it in 2004. It is quiet and pulls very well. |
O-1 class Mikado |
O-1 The 3100 between runs at Kelly Lake, MN, date unknown. The locomotive is a class O-1 mikado and is running her last miles on the iron range.
|
O-1#3142 on the point of a freight at Cashmere on the old layout. The 3142 was built by the late Irv Lange and is by far one of the best locomotives I have. It is well detailed, weights a ton and has a very smooth mechanism that shines in slow speed running. Irv installed a large cam when building it. I added Lenz Gold Maxi and Tsunami decoders. I also repainted it in Glacier park colors. |
O-3 class Mikado |
O-3 #3205 at Kelly Lake MN, 1952. |
I have built a Hines USRA heavy mike. It is not yet painted. It is one of several engines awaiting the release of a high amp Tsunami decoder. Model picture coming |

O-4 class Mikado |
O-4 Mike # 3224 at Minneapolis 1954. |
O-4 #3216 held by a red board on the old layout. This is another scratch built engine with a mechanism re-built by Dave Brown. The late Mel Horn did a masterful job painting. It is one of several engines awaiting the release of a high amp Tsunami decoder. |

O-5 class Mikado |
Otto Perry captured O-5 #3307 is backing its train at Vancouver in August 1938. |
A kit bashed O-5 built from an USRA light 2-8-2 mechanism and an H-4 superstructure. Conversion work was skillfully done by Dave Brown in 2008 |
---|---|
The O-5 has now been painted as the 3307. I also added a light on the tender and handrails. Like the O-4 and several other engines, it awaits Soundtraxx releaseof the higher amp Tsunami sound decoder. |
O-6 class Mikado |
The first O-6#3350 awaits its next assignment. Spokane 1938.

Model Started. Picture coming. |
