Locomotives of the Empire Builder

Heavy Great Northern Steam Power

N class 2-8-8-0s

N-3 #2021 is seen on the deadline at Superior WI about 1958.

N-3 #2001 at Fidalgo. This loco is an import from Oriental Limited with a factory paint job. It runs well and is awaiting a high amp Tsunami.

P-2 class Mountain

Freshly painted #2505 on the head of a freight in 1955 west of Fargo, N.D. The P-2 were strictly Passenger locomotives until bumped from that service by the arrival of diesels.

P-2 2510 passed a friut packing plant at Fidalgo. The model is a Pecos River import with the factory paint. Unfortunately, there were problems with mechanism on many models. Dave Brown rebuilt the 2510 and it is now a great runneer. The 2510 has a Digitraxx 383 decoder and a Tsunami.

The 2507, repainted and ready to be placed on exhibit at Wishram, WN

PRB inported the P-2s in three versions 'Original', as delived by Baldwin, 'Intermediate', with a longer tender and different details, and the 'Final' version with a longer tender, slant cab, dual air pumps on the pilot deck etc.

Q class 2-10-2s

Q-1 is between assignments at Portland, Ore. in 1949. Q-1 saw regular service on the NP owned joint line between Seattle and Portland.

An O scale Q-1 sitting on a roundhouse track on the old layout. The roundhouse and service tracks have been saved and will be on the new layout. The Q-1 was built by custom built for me by the late Bud Jaggers in 1990. Dave Brown rebuilt the mechanism and the late Mel Horne painted it. I wrote the checks! Once available I will install a high amp Tsunami. The 2125 runs very well and is a tremendous puller.

R-1 class 2-8-8-2

R-1 arriveng at Minot N.D on a snaowy day. Date unknown.

R-1 #2040 is a Weaver import and a work in progress. Weaver, who caters to the 3-rail market apparently went to the Korean builder who created the Oriental Limited R-2 and had a stripped down version built with an open cab and 48' tender designed for a vestibule cab. I swapped the tenders between this and an Oriental Limited O-8, added an inside bearing truck. In the future I'll add many castings from PSC and tehn repaint it.

R-2 class 2-8-8-2

R-2 # 2055 with a long freight in 1938 eastbound on the mainline east of Glacier Park Station. Otto Perry picture.

Left, R-2 #2055 is getting ready to depart. The R-2 is an Oriental limited import with a factor paint job. She runs smoothly and quitely. Like several other large engines, she is awaiting a high amp Tsunami decoder.

S-1 #2550 on the point of Freight Train 402. date and location not specified.

The S-1 #2550 waits a highball at the old Fidalgo depot Engine was scratch built in 1991. Doug Cockerham rebuilt the me mechanism one of the very first with his boiler mount motor and geartower in the firebox. I added additional details, PFM sound, a cam and painted it. In 2007, I removed the PFM sound and added a Lenz gold maxi decoder. She is one of my favorite locomotives

The hogger on extra 2550 east is awaiting a hi-ball at Fidalgo.

S-2 class 4-8-4
