Northern Steamship Company was the oldest of the Maritime ventures providing through service from Buffalo to Duluth, by passing Chicago.


Trans Pacific to the Orient
Through service to the Orient began in 1896 with an arrangement between Great Northern and NYK Line.
Great Northern's own service to the Orient began in 1905 when the SS Minnesota, pictured here, and the SS Dakota entered service.
Great Northern received much pasenger and freight traffic including silk from U.S flag carriers including the Admiral Orient Line.
Promotions for the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Fair featured the SS Minnesota.

 


Pacific Coast to California

Great Northern Pacific steamships connected the Oriental and Oregonian

with San Francisco in time for the 1914 Panama Pacific Exposition
